The first time I sat astride a Yamaha FZR 1000 EXUP, It felt Huge, Long, ungainly, hard to manoeuvre and heavy. I walked away. 3 days later, I went back to buy it. The stories that follow will explain that change of heart, and hopefully give you an insight into my love affair with this monster of a bike.
Bike Of The Decade
It was voted best bike of the 80โs on 3 continents it was so good and it really was the first Hyper Sports bike, ushering in true race performance for road bikes. Despite many efforts, for the next 25 years, the chassis stayed predominantly unchanged through all the power increases. It was THAT good.

Owning Yamaha FZR 1000’s Is Addictive
I now have 2 of these amazing motorcycles. The second is a naked powerbike. It’s engine has YZF 750 cams and cylinder head and the frame is polished. It also has a two brothers racing exhaust system. A YZF750 Swingarm and the later Yamaha FZR 1000 RU upside down forks finish it off nicely and it is one of my favourite bikes ever.

Both of these bikes are fantastic around Cadwell Park which is a tight technical circuit. I have spent many laps enjoying passing many newer bikes with ease. The handling is neutral with great feel and the power delivery is totally addictive. I did put them on the road at one point but realised very quickly I was going to loose my licence. So they have been kept for track use along with the Laverda.

bbut add very little oof worth. It’s good to see an educational article of some real value to your readers and me.
It is actually going down on my list of details I need to mulate being a new

Cardry on the fantastic work!
Well done,
Eugenio
thanks, i do my best ๐
What a nice bit of history and info to come across, I think I may have just bought this very bike as a non runner a few days ago ๐ I cleaned and balanced the carbs and it’s fired up and running, it’s not very happy idling at anything lower than 2000rpm once it’s warmed up though as it bogs out , can you remember if it was doing the same when you were racing it?
Just wanted to rule out the racing cams and head before I go digging as a low idle probably isn’t a concern out on the track ๐
Fingers crossed you’re still on here as it would be great to hear about anymore experiences you had with it. ๐
many thanks,
Ben.
the grey one or the orange one? but both ran fine, Mat had them both going too when we last spoke, the orange one just blew smoke on the overrun
